What Is A Gantry Crane

gantry crane is sort of overhead crane which provides support to cranes that are used for holding cranes in an upright position. For this very reason, all the material that the lift is lift must b first transferred to the crane. The crane is able to move back and forth as well as left and right on a large rectangular frame. All those areas that can be reached by the overhead gantry crane is said to be within its operating area.

Uses of the overhead gantry crane

The overhead gantry cranes are generally found in factories for movement of material on the shopping floor where the products are slowly assembled. For example, when a large piece of metal equipment is being built, the metal parts will arrive on a truck. The truck is parked with the operating premises of the overhead gantry crane and then the gantry crane is used for unloading the materials. The gantry cranes are also used for moving the parts around, generally along the assembly line as and when the components are assembled. Once the work is done, the gantry crane is used for loading the finished portion back into the truck so that they can be removed from the factory.

Even a child can easily and comfortably handle a gantry crane in a factory. It is fun to operate such equipment. But, to operate the gantry cranes, one needs to be well knowledgeable and trained in its operations. Since the cranes are meant for lifting heavy material, the operator must know about the crane’s lifting techniques and the operator may need to get an operating license. The gantry cranes are designed to lift to a particular limit, which must not be exceeded. It is also a challenge to move material on the end of a lengthy cable. So, the operator needs to be careful while handling equipment on the overhead gantry crane.

Overhead Gantry Crane- Useful in Industry

There are different gantry cranes that are useful in many industries, warehouses and smaller industries. The cranes are available in adjustable height or fixed height forms, usually made of aluminum, depending on what the crane will be used for. The crane is made of two upright beams with a cross beam. The crane is made of two legs which are A-shaped having two wheels at the bottom to facilitate its movement and portability. Generally, the smallest gantry crane is used in manufacturing work for moving large parts, molds or containers in and out of assembly, workstations and other locations. In a warehouse, the gantry crane is used for moving bulky and heavy material in the working area and these cranes have the capacity of handling as much as eight thousand pounds. They have a height which is fixed at 10 feet, though it can be adjusted between seven and sixteen feet. This allows the gantry crane to move with flexibility. Some of the companies also build a custom gantry crane that caters to specific needs of the manufacturer or company.
